The World Championship Bullfight and Concert will be returning this weekend to the Hardy Murphy Coliseum, and over the course of tonight and tomorrow evening bullfighters from across the country will be competing to be named the winner. Deanna Townsend, special project analyst with the Chickasaw Nation, said the bullfighters will be competing in freestyle fighting.
“These are the rodeo clowns who protect the people who are participating in the actual rodeos,” Townsend said. “For example if the guy falls off the bull in the rodeo and the bull goes after him, these guys are the clowns who go in to protect him.”
Townsend said the bullfighters will compete on both Friday and Saturday nights, and the top five fighters will compete again in the championship on Saturday.
In addition to the bullfighting, each night will have a musical performance with Mark Willis taking the stage tonight and Moe Bandy performing on Saturday. Willis has had numerous top 40 singles on the Billboard Country Charts and was inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry earlier this year. Bandy also had a string of top 40 country hits in the 70s and 80s.
On top of the concert, the event will also host two special guests. 2019 Miss Rodeo Oklahoma Kodi Smalygo will be making a special appearance, and four-time world champion trick roper and two-time world champion gun spinner Rider Kiesner will be giving special performances each evening.
The World Championship Bullfight Finals and Concert is taking place at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum tonight and tomorrow evening. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. and the bullfights begin at 7:30 p.m. nightly. Tickets will be available at the door as well as at Jimmy’s Western Wear and Brad’s Western and Work Wear in Ardmore and Sharpe’s Department Store in Madill.
