Ardmore Animal Care is hosting its first ever Bark Bash this Saturday and everyone is invited to attend the free Halloween carnival event. The event will include free pizza and cotton candy, vendors, carnival games, a petting zoo and of course, reduced price pet adoptions.
Kasey Renteria, executive director, said in addition to being a fun event for the community, Bark Bash will also help adopt out some of the animals currently residing in the shelter. As of Tuesday morning, Renteria said there were approximately 90 dogs and 70 cats available for adoption. During the event all adoption fees will be $5.
“We are, unfortunately, still staying over capacity, so we’re trying to get as many out the door as we can,” Renteria said. She said these animals encompass all breeds and all ages with puppies and kittens as young as two months old and seniors as old as 10.
Because of the high volume of pets, the shelter will also be offering a $5 adoption fee on all animals already spayed or neutered through the end of the week.
“We have a lot of animals that are already spayed or neutered and are ready to walk out the door, so we’re doing $5 adoptions on all of them for the rest of the week,” Renteria said and added that while the amount of animals coming into the shelter seems to be slowing down a bit, one of the shelter’s biggest issues is the number of litters of kittens coming through the door.
“Cats reproduce so quickly and litter after litter is being born,” Renteria said. “We’ve been lucky enough to foster out close to 100 (kittens) a month, but then those that are fostered all end up coming back here to get adopted, and that’s one of the reasons we’re staying so full. That’s just another example of why people really need to get their cats spayed or neutered.”
Bark Bash will take place at Ardmore Animal Care from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. All prizes and activities are 100% free but the shelter will be accepting donations of cash or supplies. Renteria said the items they are most in need of right now are cat litter, bleach, laundry soap and dish soap.
