An altercation between two inmates at the Carter County jail reportedly broke out Sunday afternoon.

Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant said guards were able to break up the altercation before it became too violent. The only reported injury was to one of the inmates involved.

The inmate was transported to the hospital to be treated for a cut to his hand, Bryant said.

“It was not as bad as everyone was making it out to be,” Bryant said regarding comments on social media.

Officers are unsure what may have led up to the altercation.

The Carter County jail will, however, be on lockdown until officers feel it is safe to reopen the facility, Bryant said. “It might be a while,” he said.
