Ardmore, OK - Memorial services for Herbert Upchurch will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 2021 with Rick Baggett and Randal Richards officiating at the Craddock Memorial Chapel.
Herb was born February 22, 1936 in the Kiamichi Mountains near Nashoba, Oklahoma to Lesley and Stella (Watkins) Upchurch. He graduated from Nashoba High School in 1953 and from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1960 with a Bachelor's of Science in Biology and Chemistry. He moved to Ardmore, married Patricia McNeely, and went to work for the Noble Foundation, where he worked for 32 years as a Research Biologist before the Bio-Medical division closed in 1993. His research was published in many medical and cancer journals where he was senior author of four articles and co-author of forty articles. He acquired a shared patent on May 12, 1983 for a monoclonal antibody that is still being used today. He also published a book review and traveled to Texas, Florida, Maryland and Louisiana to present his work to fellow researchers and scientists. While working at Noble, he went to school at night acquiring thirty hours of accounting and started a tax and bookkeeping business out of his home that lasted from 1975 to 2003. He held offices in many community organizations including being a Jaycee's Director for seven years, Science Fair School Projects and Awards Chairman for fifteen years and Ardmore ISD Board of Education member for six years. He was a Hardy Murphy Coliseum Board Member for six years, and a Carter County Fair Board Member for fifteen years where he served as Vice President for seven years before serving as President and treasurer. Herb and Pat were responsible for organizing and producing the Carter County Free Fair for 22 years.
He had many hobbies, but most recognized by his family and friends was his role as the world's best Cat-Fisherman. He was also an avid gardener and provided family, friends, and neighbors with many delicious home-grown vegetables.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother Hobart, sister Velda, grand-daughter Sarah Jane and great-granddaughter Lilly Claire.
He is survived by his wife Patricia of the home, and two children: a son Dr. Alan Upchurch and wife Robin of McKinney, TX and a daughter Paula Pfau and husband Doug of Ardmore, OK. He was proud of his six grandchildren, J.W. Cox of Allen, TX, Mary Beth Swofford and husband Jeff of Phoenix, AZ, Chase Upchurch of Allen, TX, Caroline Upchurch and fiancé Brian Hager of McKinney, TX, Dr. Sadie Hlavenka and husband Devin of Ardmore, OK and Dr. Savannah Caro and husband Mick of Newcastle, OK. He also loved three special chosen granddaughters, Nancy Lehman and husband Derek of OKC, OK, Allyson Ulucay and husband Kagan of Austin, TX and Robin George and husband Daris of Ardmore, OK and special great-grandchildren Ester Sofia and Lucy Carin Lehman, Shiloh Clarity and Loyal Daris George and Etta Ulucay. He had special nieces and nephews Ashley Rutledge her husband Chad of Magnolia, TX, Karl Pulliam of Edmond, OK, Keck Upchurch and wife Sylvia of Edmond, OK, Jean Ann Parker, Jana Muesegaes and husband Bob and Jill Crawford and husband Steve all of Tahlequah and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and a host of wonderful friends, fishing buddies and neighbors.
