Roy Butler, 96, of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, and formerly of Ardmore, Okla., traded this earthly adventure for a heavenly one on November 15, 2022. Born in 1926 in Rising Star, Texas, to Hazel and Tom Butler, he served in the United States Navy after completing the Officers Training Program at the University of Texas. On his return, he attended Texas Tech University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Geology and a master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering. He began his career with Continental Oil Company as a field geologist in Kansas and Oklahoma before joining Samedan Oil Corporation in Ardmore. He became President of Samedan in 1975 and later became CEO of Noble Affiliates in 1980. Prior to managing the migration of Noble Drilling into a separate entity and spinning off the Noble Foundation as a non-profit research organization, he took Noble Energy public on the NYSE in 1972. He retired as CEO in 1982 but remained on the Board of Directors. He was very active in First United Methodist Church of Ardmore serving as an usher for many years and was active in Methodist Men. He served his community as City Council Chairman and Mayor of the City of Ardmore, and proudly served his industry as President of the Independent Petroleum Association of America. He was named a Distinguished Alumni by Texas Tech University in 1971 and has an endowed Chair in his name at the School of Petroleum Engineering there. He served on the Board at Memorial Hospital of Ardmore, the Salvation Army of Ardmore, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, and he delivered for Meals on Wheels in Marble Falls, Texas. He was married to the love of his life, Mary Lou Lawson Butler, for 60 years. They shared a passion for life filled with their devotion to civic duties, their love of and service to the First Methodist Church of Ardmore, travel around the world, the game of golf, and most importantly, their commitment to raising a family with enduring values and strong character. Roy is survived by his two children, son Thomas Butler (Patrick Owings) of Tampa, Florida, and daughter LouAnn (Wayne) Noll of San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren: William Noll (Lauren), Sarah (Davide) Scravaglieri, and Andrew Butler (Elizabeth); and six great-grandchildren: Gabriele Scravaglieri, Raffaele Scravaglieri, Caroline Butler, Foster Noll, Blaine Alexander, and Abigail Bedke as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Lawson Butler, his twin brother, Ray Butler, his sister-in-law Sue Butler, his brother Keith Butler and his wife, Jeanne, his nephew, Brent Butler, and brother-in-law Bernie Lawson, and his wife, Jennie Lawson. A memorial service will be held December 9, 2022, at 11 a.m. at The Church at Horseshoe Bay.
