Shop with a biker

On Saturday morning, Ardmore Walmart shoppers might have seen something that may have seemed a bit unusual upon first glance: kids and bikers going through the store shopping together.

This is actually a long-standing tradition of local bike club American Iron Riders. For nearly 30 years, the group takes some local children in need back to school shopping.

“We have 25 kids on a list, and we give them $100 a piece to buy school supplies, clothes, whatever they need,” said club member Harold Jones. “We reach out to the schools to get a list of names. This year we’re working with Springer, Wilson and Healdton. Next year we’ll rotate to a different set of kids.”

This isn’t the only time this group of kids will interact with the American Iron Riders. This December, they’ll once again all meet up to go Christmas shopping.

Jones said the group has multiple fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for these shopping trips.

“We have several fundraisers throughout the year to raise money,” he said. “Even today, people will come up to us and ask us what we’re doing, and they’ll donate some money.”

The group also likes to help out local veterans. In fact, later this week the American Iron Riders will be joining forces with the Ardmore Elks Club to donate televisions to some residents at the Ardmore Veterans Center.

“We really like to help in our community,” Jones said. “Our focus is on helping out the kids and our veterans.”
