Kingston coach Chad Rumer said Tishomingo out-rebounded his team 46-23
KINGSTON — Taylor Wilkinson buried a jumper from the left corner two seconds before halftime.
Tishomingo scored the first nine points in the third quarter, which stretched the Lady Indians’ lead to 17 points.
Tishomingo beat Kingston going away, 54-35, in the third-place game at the Kingston New Years Classic.
Wilkinson also hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring.
The Lady Indians’ junior paced all scorers with 20 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.
“She’s definitely the leader, offensively and defensively,” Tishomingo coach Boyd Houser “She shot free throws really well today.
“She’s definitely our leader and go-to player.”
Tishomingo (6-3) reclaimed the lead at 14-12 with 27 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Cheyanne Arkansas passed up a 3-pointer on the right wing to feed Rylee Barnes for a hoop on the right block.
Kingston (7-4) sophomore Kes Reeves hit two free throws at the 4:25 mark of the second quarter, which halted a 14-2 Lady Indians’ run.
Kingston’s Taylor Bailey hit a runner in transition around the 2:15 mark, which cut the Lady Redskins’ deficit to 23-21.
Tishomingo answered with an 8-2 run to close the half, culminated by Wilkinson’s jumper.
Kingston opened the second half in a 1-3-1 half-court zone defense.
“I thought our 2-1-2 set was pretty effective,” Houser said, especially “when Taylor started attacking the gaps.”
Meanwhile, Reeves’ foul trouble contributed negligibly to Kingston’s inability to score a third-quarter field goal, Lady Redskins coach Chad Rumer said. Kingston hit four free throws in the period.
Reeves led Kingston with 15 points due in large part to 10-of-11 shooting from the free throw line.
“We didn’t rebound like we should,” he said. “We got out-rebounded 46-23. That was basically the game. It’s that simple, so that’s what we’ve got to work on.”
