SULPHUR — Hannah Knox scored the first basket of the fourth quarter.
Fox fans cheered warmly.
This is Knox’s first year to play basketball; she transferred from Living Word Christian Academy.
That hoop from the right block expanded Fox’s lead to 24 points.
The visitors led wire-to-wire, earning a 45-19 win Monday at the G.T. (Tom) Daugherty Activities Center.
“(It was) very special,” Fox coach Mark Williams said. “She comes to practice and works hard every single day. She’s had a little trouble scoring.
“She scored, and it’s a great thing for her because she puts a lot of effort into the game. She’s just a great kid.”
Fox (4-4) led 13-4 after one quarter, thanks in large part to Tasha Moore’s three 3-pointers. She’s struggled with her shot since the season opener at Paoli on Dec. 4.
“She shot well for us last year. She started the year shooting well this year,” Williams said. “She’s definitely been in a slump, has not been able to get it to get it to fall.
“She hit a few tonight. Hopefully that’ll progress.”
Despite not scoring in the final three quarters, Moore continued to fire away against Oklahoma School for the Deaf’s 2-3 zone.
“That’s what she has to do,” Williams said. “For us to win as a team, we have to have her. She has to be a scoring threat from that area.”
In contrast, Oklahoma School for the Deaf (1-7) struggled with its three-point shooting. The Lady Indians’ Sara Dobbs missed three of her team’s four attempts in the opening quarter; OSD could not shoot Fox out of its 2-3 zone.
Savannah Schlegel scored both of her field goals in the first quarter.
Haley Runels paced the Lady Indians’ with six points, scoring two field goals in the second period.
Fox’s Cassie Barber — who finished with a game-high 11 points — buried a jumper from about 15 feet from the hoop in the left corner with a couple seconds to play in the first half, which stretched the Lady Foxes’ lead to 25-13.
Dawn Sledd’s field goal marked the Lady Indians’ lone points in the third period.
Barber hit another quarter-ending jumper.
“I’m proud of my girls,” Williams said. “I love them. They’re good kids. I couldn’t ask for a better group.”
