TISHOMINGO — A 2-3 zone is vulnerable to two things: three-point shots and offensive rebounds.
Latta scored one hoop of each variety in the first quarter.
Though Davis took the lead twice in the second half, the Lady Panthers immediately responded, issuing Davis its first loss, 30-21 Saturday in the girls’ Tishomingo Invitational Tournament championship game.
Jaycee Sanders and Becky Wilson made the All-Tournament team.
Davis (12-1) hit 4 of 7 free throws in the final period — which began with Latta owning a 16-15 lead.
“That’s one thing we’ve been struggling at, really since Christmas,” Davis coach Jeff Brown said. “Tonight, we were not good from there. I’ve been telling the girls since Christmas that sooner or later, we’re going to play a team that’s good enough to beat us if we don’t make our free throws.
“It wasn’t just free throws. We missed a lot of shots in the paint, too. We just didn’t play very well offensively.”
Early in the game, Latta was ready to double if Wilson caught the entry pass. Sydney Brinlee matched up well one-on-one against Wilson, who battled foul trouble.
“We knew how they would play. They’re very well-coached,” Brown said, referring to head coach Bruce Blunk and his assistant, Carri Storts. “They play good defense. They blocked out well so you don’t get a whole lot of second-chance opportunities.”
Latta blocked four first-quarter shots as the Lady Panthers held Davis — ranked No. 10 in Class 3A — scoreless through one period.
Davis turned to its defense a quarter later.
The Lady Wolves scored 50 percent of their first-half points off turnovers; Latta led 9-8 at half.
Davis didn’t score its first points until Wilson hit a field goal with 4:12 to play in the second quarter.
With 3:49 to play in the third quarter, Jazmyne Thomas scored in the paint to give Davis its first lead — 13-12.
Twenty-seven seconds later, Latta reclaimed the lead.
At the 3:56 mark of the final period, Davis senior point guard Jaycee Sanders scored off the dribble to give Davis a 17-16 lead.
Latta answered 24 seconds later with a second-chance hoop.
The Lady Panthers’ Savanna Humphrey hit both of the game’s two 3-pointers: one in the first quarter to extend her team’s lead to 5-0. Her second one occurred at the 2:56 mark of the final period, which stretched Latta’s lead to 31-27.
