RINGLING — After trailing much of the game, the Healdton Lady Bulldogs managed to rally in the final period to tie the game at 47-all in regulation and then out-score Ringling 7-4 in overtime to defeat the Lady Blue Devils 54-51 Tuesday night at the Ringling high school gym.
It was an Oilfield Conference game, and the Lady Bulldogs improved to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Lady Blue Devils fell to 5-9,1-3.
Healdton finally knotted the game at 47 with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. And following a Ringling turnover, the Lady Bulldogs had possession with 22 ticks remaining. But they turned the ball over as well to send the game into overtime.
Free throws became important in the extra frame, especially for the Lady Bulldogs. Ringling got a field goal and two free throws by Ali Good in the overtime period. But Healdton got an inside bucket by Hunter Tolliver.
Abbie Etter hit 5 of 6 from the charity stripe to pull out the victory.
“We had a chance to win in regulation, but we let that opportunity get away from us,” Healdton coach Mike Phillips said. “I tried to put a positive spin on things and told the girls that at least the overtime gave us four extra minutes to play basketball.
“We played better in the second half, and that made the difference. We challenged the girls to pick up on our defense. And I believe that was the key ingredient to us being able to come from behind and get the win.”
Ringling put together a strong first half by out-scoring Healdton 12-9 in both the first and second periods to take a 24-18 lead at intermission.
But Healdton gradually started to put things together in the second half. An 8-2 run by the Lady Bulldogs knotted the game at 26-all at the halfway point in the third.
But Ringling pulled away in the closing seconds to maintain a 33-30 lead heading to the final eight minutes.
Tolliver had 19 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double game to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Caycee Griffin had 14 points, and Etter finished with 10 points — with half of those coming in the overtime period.
Alyssa Cox led the Lady Blue Devils with 12 points, and Kass Perkins had 11 points.
