SULPHUR — Sulphur started out the Class 3A playoffs with a 28-7 win against Marlow on Friday night at Agee Field.
Sulphur struck first on the scoreboard with a 21-yard run by Cameron Jones four minutes into the game that led to a Jared Williams extra point.
Trey Kiser added a 61-yard touchdown run less than four minutes later to put the Bulldogs on top 14-0.
Sulphur’s two-headed rushing attack of Jones and Kiser made a big impact. Kiser tallied a game-high 199 yards on 27 carries with three touchdowns. Jones finished with 108 yards on 17 carries.
Marlow answered with a run play by Will Coffman scored from 20 yards out with 49 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit in half to 14-7.
Sulphur didn’t allow another touchdown and yielded just 50 rushing yards to Marlow in the entire game.
“Holding a team to only one touchdown gives us a huge amount of confidence moving into next week,” Kiser said.
Kiser scored his second touchdown of the game midway through the third quarter to give the Bulldogs a two-touchdown lead. He completed the hat track with a 2-yard run with 7:24 remaining in the fourth as the Bulldogs rolled past the Outlaws in round one of the playoffs.
“The offensive line did a good job opening up running lanes for our running backs and myself,” Jones said.
In round two of the playoffs, Sulphur (9-2) will face the No. 1 team in Class 3A: the Jones Longhorns (11-0). The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff this Friday in Jones.
