Plainview’s student section did its best to serve the role as “sixth man.”
The Indians faithful were boisterous when play became chippy during the first half. They cheered every turnover that Plainview forced to take the lead after falling behind early by 11 points. They continued to be enthusiastic during a close second half.
Plainview was energized by its student section but Durant made the necessary plays during the fourth quarter to pull away for a 68-61 victory Tuesday night at Plainview Activity Center.
Durant had the upper hand in the first quarter, racing out to a 20-13 lead after eight minutes of play.
Good defense and accurate 3-point shooting helped Plainview to creep back in the game. Devin Jones, Jordan Jones and Caleb Hunter each made a 3-pointer within a three-minute span midway through the quarter. The last of those treys brought the Indians to within 30-28.
Plainview (0-2) took a 34-33 lead on a Devin Jones steal and layup with 2:22 remaining before halftime. He sparked the Indians with a game-high 21 points. Hunter and Jordan Jones each contributed 13 points.
Durant led 38-36 at halftime.
Durant won the rebounding battle in the third quarter but Plainview remain steadfast and trailed by one point, 48-47, heading into the fourth.
A Devin Jones jump shot near the free-throw line 24 ticks into the final quarter put the Indians in front 49-48.
It remained a one- or two-possession game until the final two minutes.
Hunter made a jumper with 4:33 left to pull Plainview to within 59-56 but a Durant 3-pointer from the right wing 15 seconds later increased the Lions’ advantage to 59-53.
