BYNG — Lone Grove came out the aggressor and overcame a scoreless third quarter to defeat Byng 41-26 Friday night on the road.
The Lady Horns recorded 13 points in each of the first two quarters to Byng’s total of 10 over that span to gain a 26-10 halftime lead.
The fast start pleased Lone Grove coach Jeff Word, whose Lady Horns lost 56-46 to Class 3A’s No. 5 Washington on Dec. 13.
“After the Washington loss, we grew up some more and started believing in ourselves, especially on defense,” Word said. “It showed tonight in the first half.”
Things got interesting in the third quarter. Lone Grove (3-3) attempted just two free throws — both misses — and didn’t record a single point. Byng (4-4) scored all 10 points in the frame.
Despite Byng’s surge, Lone Grove led 26-20 going into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Horns penetrated the Lady Savages’ half-court press with better success during the final quarter of play.
And Lone Grove got to the free-throw line at a better rate, too. The Lady Horns went 7 of 10 charity stripe over that span of play.
HayDen Epley went four of five at the foul line during the final eight minutes of play. She finished with 14 points. So did Katelynn Cobb.
Taleigh Nail hit double figures with 10 points on the power of two 3-pointers, two free throws and one fourth-quarter two-point field goal.
Lone Grove is slated to play its first game of 2017 on Jan. 3, when the Davis Lady Wolves make a visit to Gary Scott Center.
