SULPHUR — Sulphur coach Chase Todd saw a Bulldogs team Tuesday night that continues to reap the rewards for the hard work that it puts forth in the gym working on their free throws.

When Plainview was forced to foul during the fourth quarter, Sulphur stepped up at the charity stripe. The Bulldogs went 14 of 17 at the foul line over that span to finish off a 56-42 home win.

“I was proud of our guys for finishing the game well,” Todd said. “We have been working hard on that, and it was huge for us tonight.”

The energy that Sulphur displayed at the onset was just as vital.

Jacob Farrell’s field goal put the Bulldogs ahead 7-0 three minutes into the contest. He tallied nine points.

Jared Williams paced Sulphur with 10 points.

Plainview not only made sure the game didn’t turn into a rout but actually got ahead at the end of the first quarter.

Caleb Hunter’s three-point play with a right-hand layup and subsequent make of a free throw with 1:12 remaining in the first quarter brought the Indians all the way back from seven down into a 10-9 lead.

Hunter led all scorers with 11 points.

But every time that Plainview attempted to climb back into the game, Sulphur always had a response. And it was a good second quarter on defense that helped the Bulldogs claim the momentum for good.

Sulphur used good dribble penetration through Plainview’s defense to get good looks at the basket. Jared Williams 3-pointer with 4:38 remaining until halftime put the Bulldogs ahead 20-13.

Plainview didn’t get its first field goal of the second quarter until Hunter’s runner with 28 seconds remaining.

Sulphur outscored Plainview 15-5 during the second quarter for a 26-17 halftime lead.

“The run to start the game was nice for confidence, but those small runs happen,” Todd said. “They have a talented group of players. They handle the ball well and play extremely had. It was a hard-fought game on both sides.”
