Shey Hollar, Shelbi Scarbrough and Emily Sloan help Thackerville earn South Central Conference win.

THACKERVILLE — Kyra Shelton was a good eighth-grade player, Thackerville coach Cody McCage said.

As she rose to the high-school ranks, McCage "knew she'd be able to score. She's got a lot of confidence. She'll shoot the ball if she's open. That's what I want from her."

Shelton keyed the decisive run.

Shey Hollar, Scarbrough and Emily Sloan also contributed in Thackerville's 48-41 win Tuesday in Thackerville.

Shelton credits her confidence to a loved one, saying it originates "mostly from my dad, Michael," Kyra said. "He's always coached me since I was five to always shoot with confidence."

Thackerville's (8-6, 2-2 South Central Conference) freshman hit a 3-pointer from right corner with 2:30 to play in the third quarter, tying the game at 26. Fifty-five seconds later, Shelton blocked Ginny Knox's shot from inside the left block. On the Lady Wildcats' subsequent possession, about 10 seconds later, Shelton assisted on  Scarbrough's 3-pointer.

Shelton's 3-pointer was the third, fourth and fifth points of Thackerville's 12-3 run to end the third quarter. (With about five seconds to go, Shytanna Bivings' 3-pointer snapped the hosts' run.)

Shelton credited the run to the Lady Wildcats' ability to drive and draw fouls.

Scarbrough finished with a game-high 16 points — including six of the team's eight in the first quarter.

Sloan scored her four points in the final period. She also took a charge with 6:03 to play, a possession after Fox (1-7, 0-4) freshman Jada Newhouse buried a 3-pointer to trim the Lady Foxes' deficit to 37-32.

Hollar hit a 3-pointer on her way to nine points.

"Players like Shelbi, you don't always see her stats because it's a lot of hustle," McCage said. "She gets after it every game, gets a lot of rebounds.

"Shey struggled shooting the ball here lately but she's coming around, too, which makes it nice when you have several girls that can shoot the ball."

For Fox, Bivings also scored a 2-pointer with five seconds remaining in the first half, tying the game at 19. She finished with a team-high 13 points.

Fox took control early in the second half. On two consecutive third-quarter possessions, Hannah Knox took a rebound from a Thackerville player. Both instances led to points as Fox took a 26-21 lead on Bree Phelps jumper.

Shelton returned at about the 4:15 mark. Hollar then hit a jumper, and Shelton drained her game-tying 3-pointer, marking the final tie.

"She's getting better and better every game she plays," McCage said of Shelton. "She makes some freshman mistakes, but she does a lot of good. I'm proud of her."
