LONE GROVE — Lone Grove put four players in double figures and 11 in the scoring column as the Longhorns led from start to finish to roll past the Calera Bulldogs 77-45 Friday night in celebration of homecoming at the Gary Scott Center.
Austin Felts led the Longhorns with 13 points. Caleb Norman, Cam Northrup and Kemyon Sophus all finished with 12 points apiece.
The Longhorns knocked down 48 percent (29 of 31) of their shots from the floor to just 14 of 46 (30 percent) for Calera.
Lone Grove (9-8) finished the opening period on a 7-0 run to take a 17-7 advantage to the second period.
The Longhorn transition game began to work quite well in the second period as they outscored the Bulldogs 27-14 to extend their lead to 44-21 heading to the locker room.
“This was a great overall win for us,” Lone Grove coach Nubbin McClennahan said. “We put together four strong periods of play tonight. That’s what a coach is always looking for.
“Our defense did a good job of limiting what they wanted to do, and our fast-break gave us a lot of high percentage shots at the bucket. I believe we are getting close to where we need to be as we head into the final two weeks of the regular season and on into the playoffs.”
Early in the third, turnovers hurt the Longhorns and Calera capitalized on those chances and made a small run. But Lone Grove settled down and finished the period with a 17-15 edge to carry a 61-36 lead to the fourth.
Lone Grove enjoyed a 37-24 rebounding advantage and an 11-5 edge on the offensive glass. The Longhorns had a huge 14-3 advantage in second-chance points.
Lone Grove turned the ball over just three times in the first half and had but 14 in the game compared to 21 Bulldog miscues.
With mainly reserves in the lineup in the final eight minutes, the Longhorns finished things off with a 16-9 advantage in the fourth.
