TISHOMINGO — Tishomingo’s diamond-and-one formation prevented Dickson junior forward Clary Donica from really getting into a flow on the offensive end Friday.

But, for as much success as the Lady Indians had guarding Donica, one thing the Lady Indians needed to shore up was their defense of 3-pointers.

Mission accomplished.

Tishomingo limited Dickson to two points in the third quarter as the Lady Indians went on to defeat the Lady Comets 52-43.

“You’ve got to give credit to them,” Dickson coach Josh Talley said. “They made the plays in the third quarter especially to separate from us and we didn’t step up and respond to them.”

Dickson moved the ball well around Tishomingo’s zone defense in the opening minute of the third quarter to set up sophomore Keely King for a jump shot for a 25-24 Lady Comets lead 23 seconds into the stanza.

The Lady Comets then went cold from the field and were held scoreless for more than 10 minutes.

Donica converted the front end of a pair of free throws with 5:26 left in the fourth quarter to snap Dickson out of that dry spell.

However, by that time, Tishomingo was in front, 40-26.

“We didn’t attack,” Talley said. “I told the girls that if our shots aren’t falling that we’ve got to try to get to the rim. I bet the last two games we’ve shot more 3’s than the previous 15 combined. I don’t know what’s gotten into us about that.”

Tishomingo junior Rylee Barnes opened the game with a 3-pointer and contributed in just about every facet. She shot the ball well. She rebounded. She got her hands on multiple steals. She led all scorers with 21 points.

Barnes was particularly effective shooting the ball off the glass.

Face-guarded by Dickson’s Kristina Harwell, Barnes made a jump shot for a 15-10 lead for Tishomingo at the end of the first quarter.

“I’m really bad about not using the glass,” Barnes said. “The coaches have been working with me. He’s like, ‘Use the glass, use the glass.’ Tonight, I think it helped a lot more.”

Dickson rallied with effective 3-point shooting — two by junior Baylie Baker in the second quarter and another by senior Kirstyn Jolly — for a 23-19 Lady Comets lead.
