While the weather might have tried to be uncooperative on Thursday, there was simply nothing that was going to stop the Lone Grove Lady Horns.
The Lady Horns managed to survive a little rain as well as the Harrah Lady Panthers on Thursday, winning 5-1 to claim the regional championship and a berth at the state tournament for the third straight season.
“We always feel fortunate to be able to make it back to the state tournament,” Lone Grove coach Jimmy Miller said. “I’m so very, very proud of this team. They have worked so hard to improve as individuals and come together as a team. I’m excited to see what next week holds for us.”
Lone Grove got on the board in the bottom of the third when Chloe Pender got a sacrifice bunt down successfully which scored Malea McMurtrey.
It was 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Noa Dodson got an RBI double to center which scored Emily Burns, before Emmy Guthrie made it 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to left which scored Lexi Meadows.
Later in the fifth, Dodson struck again, this time with an RBI single to right which scored two runs to make it 5-0.
Harrah tried to rally with one run in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.
Dodson finished the game 2-for-3 with three total RBI’s.
Guthrie got the win on the mound for Lone Grove, throwing a complete game. She allowed one earned run on two hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts.
Lone Grove will now advance to the Class 4A state tournament, which begins next Thursday at Firelake Casino in Shawnee.
