The Oak Hall Episcopal School Kindness Crew donated items to the Ardmore Animal Care shelter on Tuesday. The second grade class used their Kindness Cart to collect a slew of items desperately needed by the shelter.
Second grade teacher Cathy Bartgis said the Kindness Cart was started by last year’s second grade class and further evolved this year thanks to inspiration from the book “Doug the Pug and the Kindness Crew” by Karen Yim.
The titular character has since become the mascot for the class’s Kindness Cart.
“Well we have a dog as our mascot. As our first community project idea, I thought we would help Doug the Pug and his friends and the shelter,” Bartgis said.
On October 8, the class donned bright yellow shirts and delivered the cart filled with pet food, blankets, toys, cleaning supplies and other items regularly used by Ardmore Animal Care. The class also used their trip to learn about the work done at the shelter and play with several cats and dogs during their tour of the facility.
The class also took inspiration from Doug the Pug and his favorite food by donating several pizza’s to the men and women at the shelter.
Bartgis said she hopes the field trip did more than help the people and pets at the animal shelter.
“I thought that would be a great way for the kids to learn compassion,” she said.
