Starting tomorrow the Hardy Murphy Coliseum will be filled with area youth competing in the Carter County Junior Livestock Show. Over the course of three days, students will be showing hogs, sheep, goats and cattle, and the event will conclude Friday evening with the premium sale.

For the past several years Chloe Jones has helped organize the event, and she said the show represents a year or more of hard work for all the students involved. This work includes both caring for the animals and training them to show in the ring.

“Most of these animals were purchased from a breeder, and then these kids have been working with them all year,” Jones said. “For some of the cattle, it’s been even longer than a year. Sometimes the animals can have a mind of their own, and a good showing comes with lots of practice and working with your animal. They have to be trained.”

For every animal except sheep, the animals shown will be divided into male and female categories. The female animals are judged on their breeding potential while the males are judged on their muscular structure.

Jones encouraged anyone interested to come out to a showing or stop by to see the animals and ask questions. They are also welcome to attend the premium sale on Friday evening.

“The premium sale is Friday night and we have a buyer’s reception for the sponsors and buyers starting at 5 p.m. before the sale kicks off at 6:30,” Jones said. “You’ll have all the grand and reserve champions on display, and they’ll have their stalls decorated with their awards. So it’s cool to get there a little early to walk through the stalls, chat with the kids, and watch the sale.”

The Carter County Junior Livestock show will be at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum from Wednesday March 4 through Friday March 6. Swine will be shown on Wednesday starting at 10 a.m. Sheep, goats, and cattle will be shown on Thursday at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. respectively. The show will end on Friday with the premium sale.
