An inmate at the Carter County jail died Friday morning after reportedly suffering a heart attack.

Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant said the 60-year-old inmate was serving a charge for burglary and had known pre-existing health conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a lung disease which can block airflow and make it difficult to breathe.

“He had been receiving breathing treatments, had COPD and had numerous health problems. He was not in very good health at all,” Bryant said. “He was spoken to and received his meds this morning.”

The inmate reportedly had a heart attack in his cell block around 8:30 a.m. and CPR was administered until SOAS arrived. Bryant said the inmate was pronounced dead a little while later at the Ardmore Mercy Hospital.

Per protocol, the incident is currently under investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. “As protocol that I have implemented, anytime anything like this takes place we have called OSBI in to do a complete investigation for complete transparency,” Bryant said.

More information will be released as it become available.
