Ardmore police apprehend sex offender at Central Park for alleged violation of registration
An Ardmore man was reportedly arrested for violating his sex offender registration status by being at a local park Sunday afternoon.
Ardmore Police Department Captain Eric Hamblin said officers allegedly found 66-year-old Miley Allen Strayer at Ardmore’s Central Park around 1:10 p.m. Police are unsure how long he had been at the park or what he was doing there.
However, Hamblin said APD officers have come into contact with Strayer for violation of his registration status before.
“Oh yeah, we know who he is,” Hamblin said. “He was arrested for violation of his sex offender registration act, he’s not registering correctly and per his registration he’s not supposed to be at the park or hanging out at the park.”
According to Carter County court documents, Strayer was convicted of first degree rape in 2012 and has since plead guilty to a charge for failure to register as a sex offender in 2019, as well.
According to Oklahoma State Statute, any person who has been convicted of a crime that requires the person to register pursuant to the Sex Offenders Registration Act is prohibited from loitering within 500 feet of any school, child care center, playground, or park.
“He was violating his status by being at the park,” Hamblin said. Strayer is currently being held at the Carter County Jail for the felony charge of failure to register as a sex offender.
