Two Ardmore residents recently pled guilty to complaints for child neglect after deputies discovered unsafe and unsanitary conditions at their home in October.

According to Carter County court documents, Samantha Lucille Vaughn, 33, pled guilty to one count of child neglect on Jan. 18 and Billy Dwayne Vaughn, 30, pled guilty to one count of child neglect on Jan. 28.

Samantha Vaughn received a four-year deferred sentence with a fine of $500 and Billy Vaughn received a four-year deferred sentence with a $750 fine. If the couple fulfills the stipulations surrounding their four-year probation, the incident may be cleared from their record.

A third suspect in the case George Henry Hodge, 56, currently has a warrant for failure to appear, according to court documents.

Carter County Sheriff’s Deputies were first alerted to the conditions at the Ardmore residence on Oct. 1. Sheriff Chris Bryant told The Ardmoreite a child welfare worker had expressed concern about the conditions.

When deputies arrived at the residence, Bryant said they discovered animal feces, garbage and ‘filthy’ clothing scattered throughout the house. Rats and mice were also observed in the home and the children, ages one and three, living in the home reportedly had inadequate bedding.

“It was just nasty. Nasty atmosphere, nasty conditions for those kids. Those kids don’t deserve to be living in that. Period,” Bryant said following the incident in October.
