Springer’s Cadence Shelley goes up for a layup in transition during the first half Thursday night against Mill Creek at Walker Gymnasium.

SPRINGER — Coming into the 2019-2020 season, a lot of experts said the Springer Lady Cardinals would be lucky to win a game, let alone two.

Thursday night at Walker Gymnasium, they silenced not just their critics but the Mill Creek Lady Frogs.

Fueled by a 25-point performance from Kailee Lathum and a 20-point performance from Cadence Shelley, the Lady Cardinals won their eighth game of the season with a 52-32 victory over Mill Creek.

The win helped Springer surpass its win total from last year of seven games, while Springer has now won two straight contests this week.

Early in the first quarter though, it looked like the Lady Frogs were going to pull off the upset.

Springer took the first lead of the game but the Lady Frogs took a 3-2 lead before grabbing a 9-8 lead at the 1:05 mark of the first quarter.

Going into the second quarter the Lady Frogs were hanging onto an 11-9 lead.

It took less than 30 seconds of the second quarter though for the Lady Cardinals to leap back into the lead at 13-11.

Mill Creek didn’t get its first basket of the second quarter until 3:29 left before halftime to make it 20-13.

Springer though made sure to hang onto the lead going to the break at 25-16.

The Lady Cardinals had little trouble in the third quarter as they scored 20 points while holding the Lady Frogs to just 10 points for a 45-25 lead going to the fourth.

Down the stretch, the Lady Cardinals outscored Mill Creek 7-6 to close out the game.

Madison Wickware added three points for Springer with Jalyn Dewberry and Elizabeth Fuentes each scoring two points apiece.

Springer is back in action Tuesday Feb. 4 against Thackerville at Walker Gymnasium.
