The Ardmoreite

On Monday morning a Dickson student was found to have a gun in their backpack. The firearm was discovered by the School Resource Officer, and Superintendent Jamie Mitchell issued a statement saying the school was handling the situation in accordance to Oklahoma laws and school policy.

Read the statement below.

I am writing to tell you about an incident that occurred today at Dickson School. All students and staff are safe.

Early this morning our School Resource Officer (SRO) received a report that a student may have a weapon in his/her backpack. The school was immediately placed on “hold” while our SRO located and escorted the student to a remote office, where a firearm was recovered from a backpack. Officers from Dickson PD also immediately responded to assist with the situation.

Student privacy laws prohibit me from sharing additional information about this situation; however, please know that school administrators and law enforcement officials are addressing the matter in compliance with Oklahoma law and Dickson Board of Education policy.

There is nothing more important to Dickson Public Schools than the safety, health and well-being of our students and staff. We are grateful to students who reported the issue to administrators out of concern for the safety of their fellow classmates. We also appreciate the support we received from Dickson PD.

It is never easy to share concerning news about school issues, however, I want you to know I will always communicate as openly and transparently as possible with our school family. When we work together, we can ensure we provide the best and safest educational experience for all students.

Thank you for your support of Dickson Public Schools.

Sincerely,

Mr. Jamie Mitchel
Superintendent
